April 21, 1816 ---- December 31, 1904

We have just learned of the death of Mrs. Jane R. Johnston, a very old lady whose death occurred about 9 miles northeast of Montezuma. Mrs. Johnston is the mother of John R. and Tom R. Johnston and Ann Johnston with whom she lived. The funeral was held from her late residence on Tuesday at eleven o'clock conducted by Rev. U. S. Smith and the burial took place in the beautiful Montezuma cemetery. A very large concourse of friends followed this worthy old lady to her last resting place.

MRS. JANE R. JOHNSTON

Mrs. Jane R. Johnston, the wife of John R. Johnston, was born in County Fermanaugh, Ireland, April 21, 1816 and died Dec 31, 1904 at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 10 days. The deceased was united in marriage to John R. Johnston, May 5, 1840. He having preceded her to the better world, Nov 17, 1881. To this union born 13 children, 8 boys and 5 girls, all of whom are left to mourn the loss of a kind and devoted mother, except two sons and one daughter, Margaret, Joshua and James. She also leaves 55 grand-children, 19 great-grand-children. The deceased had 8 brothers and six sisters which have precede her, but one brother Sam Jordan of Ross, Iowa, and one sister Mary Rusk of Brooksboro, Ireland. The deceased emigrated with her family in 1848 and landed in Rock Island county, Illinois, the same year, where she lived until she moved to Poweshiek county, Iowa in 1868 where she resided until her death.
