CLARA DAVENPORT JONES

Clara Davenport Jones, 90, of 703-1/2 Main St., Grinnell, died Saturday, Feb. 2, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ-Congregational, with the Rev. David B. Bowman officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The daughter of Elisha Houston and Minnie Abigail Morgan Reavis, she was born June 13, 1900, near Grinnell. She attended Grinnell public schools and Grinnell High School.

She was married to Fredrick Emerson Davenport Aug. 5, 1919, in Newton. The couple lived in Grinnell. Following Mr. Davenport's death in 1948, she continued to live in Grinnell. In September 1949 she was married to Ernest B. Jones of Grinnell, and the couple lived here until Mr. Jones' death in 1958.

Mrs. Jones worked at the Grinnell Glove Factory and spent over 20 years in the housekeeping department of Grinnell College until her retirement in 1962. She moved to Kansas City, Mo., in 1965 and returned to Grinnell in 1982.

In the 1940s, she was active with the Assembly of God Church in Grinnell as a Sunday School teacher and member of the Missionary Circle. She was also a member of the Gospel Radio Quartet which sang on a Marshalltown radio station.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Ray Davenport of Galena, Ill.; one sister, Naomi Pierce of Grinnell; one brother, Milo Reavis of Montello, Wis.; three stepsons, Ernie, Kenny and Alfred; and 22 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; her parents; four sisters, Amy Reavis, Ida Tuller, Velma Gooding and Myrtle Baker; one brother, Floyd Reavis; and a stepson, Max Jones.
