ALICE E. BAYLES

Alice E. Bayles, 90, of Newton, a former resident of Poweshiek County, died Saturday, July 25, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Westfield cemetery near Grinnell.

Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The family will be present from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

She was the daughter of John and Bertha Jane Shaw Smool and was born March 26, 1909, in Danvers, Ill. She attended rural school.

She was married to Jesse James Bayles in March 1930. The couple lived in Poweshiek and Jasper counties, and Mrs. Bayles was a homemaker. She was also a health care worker in area nursing homes.

Surviving are four sons, Loren, Delbert and Glen, all of Newton, and Harvey of Albuquerque, N.M.; two daughters, Bertha Chamra and Lila Bayles, both of Newton; 11 grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three grandchildren, five brothers and two sisters.

A memorial fund has been established in her name.
