CONDUCT FUNERAL
RITES TODAY FOR
JESSE BAYLES, 68

Jesse James Bayles, age 68, of 711 Pearl St., Grinnell, passed away Thursday evening at his home. He had been hospitalized in failing health for the last 11 weeks.

Funeral services were held today (Monday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Floy J. Ekin, pastor of the First Metodaist Church of Shelbyville, Ill., officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Willard Heffner, organist, and Darrell Wyss, vocalist.

Casket bearers were Larry Innis, Carroll Stuart, Lee Johnston, Marion See, Lowell Thompson and Francis Bartley. Burial was in Westfield cemetery, near Grinnell.

Mr. Bayles was born April 26, 1897, a Pekin, Ill., the son of John and Mattie Green Bayles, one of a family of 10 children. Following his school education, he was united in marriage with Alice E. Smool in Peoria, Ill., on February 25, 1930. To this union were born 4 sons and 2 daughters: Mrs. Edward (Bertha) Chamra of Sully; Loren E. Bayles of Newton; Delbert R. Bayles of the U.S. Navy at San Francisco, Calif.; Harvey D. Bayles of San Antonio, Texas; and Lila B. Bayles and Glenn T. Bayles, both of Grinnell.

In addition to his wife Alice and 4 sons and 2 daughters, Mr. Bayles is survived by 8 grandchildren: Wanda Chamra of Sully; Steve, Terry and Connie Bayles of San Antonio, Texas, as well as 5 brothers and 2 sisters: William L. of Toledo, Ohio; Dillard G. of Pampa, Texas; Elmer E. of Hudson, Ill.; Samuel of Atlanta, Ill.; Thomas of Cornell, Ill.; and Mrs. Launa George of Carlock, Ill.; and Mrs. Imo Couper of East Moline, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Mrs. Maude Woosley of Carlock, Ill. and Mrs. May Fetzer of Wabash, Ind.

Mr. Bayles had farmed in the Newton and Grinnell areas until 1950, and later was employed with the Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co. until his health failed. He had lived in the Grinnell area for 35 years.
