The Grinnell (IA) Herald
July 12, 1904

--Mack Jenkins was born July 16, 1870, at Westfield and died July 6, 1904, at 3:10 a.m. He came to Grinnell with his parents in 1892. He then went to Nebraska where he worked two years in the elevator business. Returning to Grinnell he went to farming for himself and lived with his parents. Last fall he bought ten acres of land near Des Moines and built a neat little house with the intention of making that his home. About six weeks before his death, however, he returned to Grinnell to make his home with his mother. He said, "I am glad I am home again, there is no place like home, for you never miss your mother till she is gone." He told his mother that he was not afraid to die, for he had never harmed any one, but tried to help others all he could. He was better to others than to himself. He was good and kind hearted, especially to his mother. He was never known to speak a cross word to her, but has often said the meanest man on earth was one who was mean to his mother. He leaves a mother, father, one brother, and four sisters to mourn their loss. One of the sisters could not be present at the funeral as she lives in Western Colorado.
