Mrs. Margaret Catharine Downing passed away Wednesday, April 7 at 7:00 P.M. at the home of her son Charles at Modesto, Calif., after several days of acute illness. Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday, April 11, by the Rev. C.B. Sylvester, pastor of the Methodist church, at the chapel of Wood, Shannon & Duncan, 921 Twelfth St. Interment was in the Odd Fellows cemetery in Modesto.

Margaret Catherine Carrico was born in Knoxville, Knox county, Ill., March 21, 1841, being eighty years, two weeks and one day old. She joined the Methodist church in early girlhood, September 1, 1862. She married William Henry Dowling at Cambridge, Henry county, Ill., and lived there for several years, came to Grinnell in the spring of 1869 and settled on a farm three miles southwest of town and lived there until the spring of 1902. She moved to a farm near Malcom, in the spring of 1906 and moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in the fall of 1907. From Los Angeles she moved to a farm near Modesto, Calif., where she lived until the end came. To this union eight children were born. The husband and two daughters preceded her to the better land. She leaves to mourn her loss six children, George A., William C., Mrs. Florence E. Beckwith of Modesto, Calif., James A., of Glasgow, Mont., Mrs. Clara Berry of Harvey, Ill., and Mrs. Laura McBreen of Omaha, Nebr.; eighteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. There are three brothers and one sister, John L. Carrico of Falls City, Nebr., Theodore A. Carrico of Lebetha, Kan., William A. Carrico of Grand Junction, Colo., and Mrs. Martha J. Kelsey, Escondido, Calif., and a host of other relatives and friends.
