RITES TODAY

Carl R. McDowell, 67 of Rte. 4, Grinnell, died Monday evening, June 10, at his home.

The son of William and Mary Heacock McDowell, he was born June 1, 1907, in the Sugar Creek area south of Grinnell. When he was four years old, his mother and sister Bertha died of typhoid fever. Following their deaths, he made his home with his older brother and his wife, Fred and Mabel, in the Oak Grove area and attended the Oak Grove Church.

He attended the rural schools near his home and was graduated from Grinnell High School in 1924. Following his graduation, he worked as a truck farmer.

On Nov. 17, 1942, he was married to Katharine Krumm in Ottumwa. The couple had two children, Daniel Carl McDowell at the family home and Mrs. Gary (Mary) McVay of Des Moines.

During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army as a combat medic in the New Guinea campaign and in the Philippines where he received the Purple Heart and other decorations. Following his discharge, he returned to Grinnell and resumed work in truck farming until illness confined him to his home in 1962. He was a member of the Grinnell First Friends Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife Katharine; his two children, Daniel and Mary; three brothers, Charles of Amarillo, Tex., Arthur L. of Grinnell and Leslie of Keystone; one sister, Mrs. Helen Northup of Gardena, Calif.; two half-brothers, Keith McDowell of Scotia, Calif., and Kenneth McDowell of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one half-sister, Mrs. Leonard (Lucille) White of Chicago, Ill. and a step-sister, Mrs. Lauriston (Fern) Mille of Yuma, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Mrs. Delpha McDowell; four brothers, William, Fred, Earl and Paul; and one sister, Bertha.

Funeral services for Mr. McDowell were held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. L. Willard Reynolds of Grinnell officiating. Organist was Edward H. Bohstedt, and pallbearers were Harold Buck, George German, Warren Lincoln, Kenneth Palmer, Bernard Simmons and Harold Whitaker.

Graveside rites were conducted by Don Baker, commander, W.R. Richardson, chaplain, and members of the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. Burial was in Westfield Cemetery southwest of Grinnell.

Should friends desire, memorials in Mr. McDowell's name may be made to the Westfield Cemetery Association.
