LELA MAXINE SIMPSON, 81

Lela Maxine Simpson, 81, of Montezuma died Tuesday, September 16, 1997 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell.

She was born December 11, 1915 in Mahaska County, the daughter of David and Georgia (Friend) Speas. She was united in marriage with Mark Simpson on December 24, 1935. They spent most of their life farming in southern Iowa and then in the Montezuma area. Lela had been a member of the Montezuma Christian Church and later, the Deep River Christian Church. She was also president and a member of the Christian Women Fellowship. Lela worked as a nursing aid at the Montezuma Care Facility for a number of years. She also provided transportation for many people, driving for Poweshiek County Council of Aging and then driving on her own.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mark, on June 19, 1977; a son, Danny and a grandson, William David Simpson.

Lela is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Alma Louise and Floyd Richards of Phoenix, Ariz.; Arla Ruth and Jerry Hull of Des Moines; and Georgia Ann and Paul Schroeder of Aurora, Colo.; three sons and their wives, William David and Phyllis Simpson of Old Town, Fla.; Keith Edward and Jane Simpson of Des Moines and Donald Wayne and Ginny Simpson of Montezuma; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Mildred and Ron Moitzfield of Pelican Rapids, Minn.; two brothers and their wives, Max and Maxine Speas of New Sharon and Lyle and Marilyn Speas of Fairfield and other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or the Diabetes Foundation.
