SERVICES HELD

Mary E. Sumpter, 79, of 1019 N. Sixth Ave. E., Newton, a former resident of Grinnell, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Colonial Manors in Baxter.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, with burial in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

The daughter of Hiram and Anna Brown, she was born May 16, 1909, in Grinnell. She was a graduate of Grinnell High School and had lived in Newton since 1934. She was married to Eli W. Sumpter Oct. 15, 1927, in Montezuma.

Mrs. Sumpter had worked for the Maytag Co. from 1944 until her retirement as a final inspector in 1971. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and the Ikettes.

Surviving are one son, Earnest "Bill" Sumpter of Marshalltown; two daughters, Margaret Van Stock of Hutchinson, Kan., and Barbara Shepard of Newton; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eli, in 1981; one brother and two sisters.
