--Geo. R. Thorpe was born at Euclid, Ohio, Dec. 1832. His parents were of German descent, his grandfather having come to this country in 1760?. Mr. Thorpe came to Marshall Co. in the early fifties and in 1852 helped to build the first frame building finished in Marshalltown. In '55 he went to Nebraska, and in '59 crossed the plains to California. Here he worked as machinist and miner for nearly four years, and was a member of the first county convention ever held in Mono county. Dec. 5th, '64, he enlisted in the 8th Cal. volunteers receiving his discharge in Oct. '65. He returned to Iowa, and in 1866 married Miss Eliza Beatty, who remains with three sons and a daughter to mourn his death.
