VIRGIL REX HEISHMAN

Virgil Rex Heishman, age 79, of Brooklyn, died Saturday, May 25, 2013 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 30, at the First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, with the Rev. John Reynolds, Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors was in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be contributed to the BGM Ag Scholarship, First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, or the Poweshiek County Ambulance.

Virgil is survived by his children, Stephen of Brooklyn, Susan Hopwood (Kenneth) of Montezuma, Lori Hiner (George) of Brooklyn, Brenda Hagedorn (Dan) of Grinnell and Kristi Chedester (William) of Grinnell; eight grandchildren, Nathan Hopwood (Niki) of Brooklyn, Andrea Long of West Des Moines, Tricia Allen of Bismarck, N.D., Derek Hiner of Johnston, Emily Chedester of Grinnell, Brandon, Ashley and Mariah Mikel of Grinnell and two step-grandchildren, Dennis (Jacque) of Kirksville, Mo., and Clint Hagedorn of Ames; 11 great-grandchildren, Gracie Kelley-Hawkins, Ryan Hopwood, Allison Long, Jacob Long, Lucas Rand-Long, Autumn Waterbeck, Faith Allen, Hunter Hiner, Jayden Graham, Brayden Good and Elijah Hagedorn; and a brother, Richard Heishman (Mary Jo) all of Hastings, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Jane in 2008; two brothers, Darrell and Maynard; and a son-in-law, Doug Mikel.

Virgil Rex Heishman was born Aug. 24, 1933, in Brooklyn, the son of Delmar and Margaret Ostrum Heishman. He graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Smith, Ark. He married Mary Jane Goodrich on Feb. 24,, 1962 in Nebraska. He was a lifelong farmer in the Brooklyn area.

Virgil enjoyed bowling, antiques and TV westerns. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and loved spending time with his family, and socializing with his many friends.
