Worthy Man Leaves Fine Record of
Usefulness, Honor and Efficiency
In All Duties Undertaken.

ONE DAUGHTER OF SHELBINA,
MO., SURVIVES HIM

Was Fire Chief, Scottish Rite Mason,
Spanish War Veteran, and Was
Everywhere Popular and Active.

The death of Jack Foster, which occurred last Wednesday afternoon, caused a pang of regret in the heart of every resident of the city. Mr. Foster, during his eighteen years residence in Grinnell, has made himself a place in the community which few men in his position are able to acquire. Naturally generous, and kind hearted, with a welcoming smile and welcoming heart, he made his way into the affections of the community and won a reputation for courtesy and kindness which will long be remembered.

Mr. Foster had been ill for nearly two years but had been up and around and the cheerful welcome which he received when he first appeared downtown from his sick bed had showed in how high regard he was held by his associates and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Foster came to Grinnell with their daughter about eighteen years ago. Mrs. Foster became active and interested in Grinnell church and social work and with the assistance of such a useful wife, Mr. Foster quickly found a place in the best social life of the city. Notwithstanding Mrs. Foster's serious handicap, she was one of the active and useful women of this community and was liked by all who knew her.

Mr. Foster was a veteran of the Spanish-American war who had held him in high honor and rewarded him with positions of trust in the veterans' organization. Mr. Foster was a member of the Masonic lodge and was also a Scottish Rite Mason and an active and useful member of the local Scottish Rite club.

Mr. Foster and his wife were also members of the Congregational church and both lived lives which exemplified fully the vows which they had taken.

He had been a member of the fire department for many years and was recently made chief to succeed Will Laymiller.

All his work in Grinnell has been of a high type and all of his associations with men in business, lodge, and society have been such as to command him to all whom he met.

He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Emmett Hanger, of Shelbina, Missouri.

Services were held at the home of Carl Speth, 431 South Main street, at 2:30 Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. E.M. Vittum. Pallbearers were John Rehder, L.C. Bennett, Frank Shults, William Jones, Carl Speth, and Luther Verbeck.
