CLEO MCMAINS, 84

Cleo Alvin McMains, 84, died Sat., Mar. 9, 1996 at the Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tues., Mar. 12, 1996 at Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma. Rev. Vince Homan, What Cheer Methodist Church officiated for the services. Alice Underwood was organist with music selections of "In The Garden" and "Peace In The Valley." Congregational hymn was "How Great Thou Art." Honorary casket bearers were Dennis Ricketts and Harvey Horn. Casket bearers were Tyler Bowen, Ryan Bowen, Scott Kaul, Richard McMains, Robert Wagner and Dick McWilliams. Burial was in Golden Rod Cemetery, Deep River, Iowa. A Masonic service was held Mar. 11 by members of Lafayette Lodge No. 52 A.F. & A.M.

Cleo was born Oct. 9, 1911 at What Cheer, Iowa, the son of Irvin Henry and Mabel Grace (Okey) McMains. On Dec. 3, 1939 he was united in marriage with Velma Horn near Tilton. For many years they farmed south of Deep River. Velma died April 27, 1994 and shortly after Cleo moved to Fort Madison to be near his daughter. He was a former member of the Deep River Methodist Church and for many years attended the What Cheer Methodist Church. He was a 50-year Mason, having joined the Golden Rod Lodge in Deep River before transferring his membership to Lafayette Lodge No. 52 A.F. & A.M. at Montezuma. Cleo was also a member of the Lafayette Chapter No. 232 O.E.S. at Montezuma and had also been a member of White Shrine at Oskaloosa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Velma, and one brother, Cecil McMains.

Cleo is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Joe Bowen of Fort Madison; three grandchildren: Nichelle and her husband, Scott Kaul of Circle Pines, Minn.; Tyler Bowen of Richfield, Minn.; and Ryan Bowen of Iowa City; two brothers: Galen McMains of Blairstown, Iowa; and Harold McMains of Fruitland, Idaho; one sister, Opal Jones, Mesa, Arizona; and other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the Deep River Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Unit.
