JOHN CHARLES JANTZEN

John Charles Jantzen was born Feb. 20, 1865, at Watertown, Wisc., the son of John Jantzen, Sr., and Mary Baustian Jantzen. He was the oldest of four children. There were two brothers, Fred and Herman of Grinnell and a sister, Mrs. W.J. Eisele of Earlham. The parents, brothers and sister all preceded him in death. He was baptized and confirmed in the St. John's Lutheran church at Watertown, Wisc., April 6, 1879. He came to Iowa with his parents in 1885 and the family settled on a farm in Chester township.

He was married Sept. 26, 1887 to Minnie Deedrick, who preceded him in death Jan. 11, 1951 To this union two children born, Mrs. Ed Speth, with whom he made his home and Edward H. Jantzen, both of Grinnell. The son and daughter and numerous nieces and nephews survive him.

Mr. Jantzen served the city of Grinnell as Fourth Ward councilman for many terms. He was prominent in all branches of the I.O.O.F. Lodge and would have been a fifty year member next year. He passed away in St. Francis hospital at 3:20 a.m. Thursday Dec. 11 at the age of eighty-seven years, nine months and twenty-one days.
