MARY (TONI) NEELY

Mary (Toni) Neely, 94, of Urbandale, formerly of Grinnell, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A Mass of the Resurrection was held Thursday, March 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Nick Adam, pastor, officiating. Music was by Marilyn Kriegel, organist, and St. Mary's Choir. Casket bearers were Ronald Page, Jonathan Page, Peter Brown, Andrew Brown, John Christopher Neely, and Anthony Dawson. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Parish Foundation, Grinnell Regional Medical Center, or to the University of St. Francis, Joliet, Ill.

She was born March 8, 1916, in Johnstown, Pa., the daughter of Anthony and Mary Widmann Krueger. She attended Johnstown schools then graduated from the University of St. Francis in Joliet. She did graduate work in social work at the University of Pittsburg and the University of Iowa. During World War II she served as a hospital field director for the American Red Cross at several army posts.

She was united in marriage with John C. Neely on Jan. 22, 1948, in the chapel at Fort Clayton in the Panama Canal Zone. They resided in Erie, Pa., and Westfield, N.J., prior to moving to Grinnell in 1971.

She served as director of social services at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, then later for Grinnell General Hospital.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Marian Study Club and St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society. She also was a member the University of St. Francis Alumni Association and the Care Review Committee of St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. She served on the board of directors of Poweshiek County Public Health, Grinnell Regional Hospice, the Iowa Hospice organization, the Iowa Chapter of Social Workers, and the American Cancer Society, Poweshiek County Chapter.

She is survived by her daughters and son, Mary Ann Neely of Des Moines, Christine Page of Troy, Mich., John Neely of Brandon, Fla., Kathleen Brown of Urbandale and Ellen Lincoln of Des Moine; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Madeleine and Eleanor Krueger, both of Johnstown, Pa. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one brother, George Krueger.
