RITES FRIDAY
FOR JOHN ROSS

John A. Ross, 60, of 1830 Fourth Ave., Grinnell died Tuesday at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness.

The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Harry Linnenbrink officiating. The Scripture Service will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery, with graveside conducted by the Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

The son of Charles and Alice Dupre Ross, he was born Nov. 4, 1919, at Whiteburg, Iowa. He later moved to Des Moines, graduating from Dowling High School in 1936. He worked for the Shell Oil Co. in Minneapolis, Minn. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Air Force in Great Britain, Belgium and France.

Following his discharge, he was married to Mary McVay on May 5, 1945, at Kansas City, Mo. They lived in Des Moines while he attended Drake University. Mr. Ross was employed by Mobil Oil Co. in Des Moines, and the couple later moved to Oelwein where he owned and operated the Petroleum Service Co. In 1964, they came to Grinnell and built the 63-80 Oil Co. near Malcom, which he owned and operated until illness forced his retirement. Mr. Ross was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Focht-Tennant Post No. 53, American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; a daughter, Cheryl Ross of Waterloo; a son, John Ross of Grinnell; one granddaughter; and two sisters, Mrs. Leo (Elenor) West of Ankeny and Genevieve Hart of Winterset. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leonard and Charles Ross.
