August 1878

CUSHMAN.--In Grinnell, August 5th, Rev. Job Cushman, in the 82d year of his age.

He was sick but one week, and was worn out rather than cut down by sickness. He selected the text for his funeral discourse, Job I:1, and requested President Magoun to preach the sermon, which will be done at some future time. His home was Kingston, Mass., though as he was never married, home has not all its significance in this case. He came to this place in June, as he said, to spend the rest of his days, which were fewer than even he expected. Here he found kind friends and ministries until the end. His was a life of economy, but equally of Christian benevolence. He gave all he had, reserving, only while he lived, an income sufficient for his support, and earnestly wished that he had more that he might bestow it where he felt it was most needed.
