RITES FOR VIRGIL SAMS HELD SUNDAY

Funeral services for Virgil I. Sams of Des Moines were conducted by the Rev. Max Johnson and the Rev. C.S. Kleckner Sunday afternoon, March 12, at the Montezuma Christian Church.

Delbert Bittner was soloist accompanied by Miss Alice Underwood, organist. Interment was in Jackson Township Cemetery. Members of the Fuller-Sarvis American Legion Post of Barnes City and the Blakley-Stevens Post of Montezuma served as casket bearers, color guard and firing squad.

Mr. Sams, 38, died Wednesday, March 8, in a drowning accident at Des Moines.

The son of Madison and Phebe Minner Sams, he was born July 4, 1928, at Montezuma. He grew to manhood in Montezuma and withdrew from high school during his sophomore year to serve in the Korean War with the armed forces. Following his discharge he returned to Montezuma and graduated from high school. He later attended Concorn University in California for two years.

Mr. Sams was married to Marjorie Bruce and to this union two daughters, Jane Ann and Andra Jileen, were born.

He was employed as a steel construction worker and served as a supervisor and foreman on several jobs.

He was later married to the former Barbara Joan Randleman.

Mr. Sams was a member of the Eagles, American Legion Post of Barnes City and the Christian church of Montezuma.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Jane Ann and Andra Jileen Sams of Pittsburg, Calif.; a step-son, Danny Joe Kimberly of the U.S. Navy; two step-daughters, Mrs. Sheila Kelly of Los Angeles and Juliee Lee of the home; his father, Madison of Montezuma; a sister, Mrs. Jerrett (Zella) Beal of Oskaloosa; three brothers, Adrian of Montezuma, Junior of rural New Sharon and Omer of Wellman.

He was preceded in death by his mother and three brothers.
