VIRGIL J. DEBOEF

Virgil J. DeBoef, 77, of Grinnell died Saturday, May 1, at his home.

Funeral services for Virgil DeBoef will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Keith Briggs of Grinnell officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner. Casket bearers will be family members. The Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit will fold and present the flag.

Interment will be at the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning at noon today (Monday); the family will be present at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m.

Born on Feb. 9, 1927, on his family's farm near Union Mills, Iowa; he was the son of Arthur and Gertie Hasselmann DeBoef. He was raised on the farm and attended rural schools, then later the former Cluthin College in Oskaloosa.

He served with the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict.

On Feb. 20, 1951, he married Marie Elrod in Prairie City. The couple lived near New Sharon and Prairie City, where they operated a grain and livestock farm. He also worked in the banking business, in Prairie City and in Freeborn, Minn.

Following his retirement, he worked in the hardware business in Albert Lea, Minn.

The couple moved to Grinnell in June of 2002.

He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church while in Albert Lea and the United Methodist Church in Grinnell. He was past president of the Lions Club in Prairie City and a member of the Jasper County Bankers Association and the Farmers Co-op Board in Prairie City.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lee Plisch, also of Grinnell; three sons, Wayne of Buffalo, Minn., Dan of Mitchellville, Iowa, and Jim of St. Ansgar, Iowa; ten grandchildren; and two brothers, Floyd of Madisonville, Tenn., and Gene of Punta Gorda, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson.

Memorials may be directs to Youth Ministries and sent in care of Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.
