VIRGIL WARREN BIDWELL

Virgil Warren Bidwell, 89, formerly of Tama, died of Alzheimer's Disease Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he had resided since 2002.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Pastor Thomas Dowling officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home.

A memorial fund has been established.

He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Poweshiek County, the son of Henry N. and Mary Miller Bidwell. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth. He served his country during World War II, entering the United States Army on Aug. 5, 1942. He served with the United States Air Force Sixth Floating Aircraft Repair Unit and the 106th Infantry Division, and was discharged on March 26, 1946, after serving in France and Germany.

Following his discharge, he moved to the Tama area where he farmed and established a trucking business.

He was united in marriage with Joan Hess on Dec. 15, 1950, in Toledo.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tama, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.).

He is survived by two sons, Robert Bidwell of Denver, Colo., and Kenneth Bidwell of Tama; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Joan; his daughter, Carol Ann Bidwell Paustian; two brothers, and three sisters.
