J. L. Barnes, son of JOHN and PHOEBE HARRISON BARNES was born in Licking county, Ohio, April 2, 1848. When he was a lad six years of age the family moved to Iowa and after a few years spent farther east in the state, finally settled in Pleasant township, Poweshiek County, where he grew to manhood.
He was united in marriage, March 13, 1878, with MISS ELIZABETH ANDREWS. To this union was born one son, ERNEST who died in 1897 at the age of seventeen years. Mrs. Barnes passed away February 6, 1903.
Mr. Barnes followed the occupation of farming and lives all of his life after coming to Iowa in this community , except a few years spent in Kansas and Missouri. He was one of a large family of children, all of whom have passed away but one sister HELEN MALINDA BEATTIE of Glidden. He was a life - long and faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church , and as long as physical strength permitted was regular in attendance at its services.
For several years past, he has lived in the home of his strength, MRS. JAMES COOPER, who with untiring effort and patience has tenderly cared for him in his decling years. He has been a great sufferer from asthma, which, added to advanced years, caused his death on Sunday afternoon, May 31, at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 29 days.
