Ronald J. Kurtz, 87, formerly of Grinnell, died April 21, 2014, in Sacramento, Calif.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to The Nature Conservancy or the Sierra Club.
He was born Nov. 5, 1926, in Holly, Mich., the son of Mildred and Reuben Kurtz. Ron was a cultural anthropologist, an ethnographer and a linguist who wrote and published extensively in his field. He was a professor of anthropology at Grinnell College for 31 years, and also lived and did research in Africa, London, Switzerland and China. He was a reader and world traveler who was devoted to environmental and social justice causes.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; three stepdaughters, Lori Spiekerman, Terry Lucas and Kelly Schupp; two sons, Gordon Kurtz and Jeremy Kurtz; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: David, Stanley, Roger and Gordon Kurtz.
