ANNA STARNES, 89

Anna W. Starnes, 89, of Grinnell died on Monday, July 10, 1995 at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, of congestive heart failure.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 13, 1995 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Alice Renaud. Casket bearers were Steve Seye, Sheryal Seye, Greg Taylor, Dawnette Taylor, Michael Siepmann, and Jason Conn. Honorary Bearers were her great-grandchildren. Graveside services were at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Graceland Cemetery near Laurel.

Anna was born on June 9, 1906 near Baxter, Iowa, to Phillip and Mary Ann Ritter Bach. She was raised on the family farm near Baxter and attended rural schools. In 1927, she was married to Harold W. Starnes at Laurel, Iowa. The couple farmed near Laurel and later operated the Standard Oil Station in Gilman. In the early 1940s, they moved to Grinnell, where they operated Starnes and Barnes Standard Oil Company. Following her husband's death in 1956, she continued to make her home in Grinnell and she worked as a cook at Bailey Park School and also the Grinnell High School.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson, Kenneth Dale Lender; four brothers; and six sisters.

Anna is survived by four sons: Donald Starnes and Dennis Starnes, both of Grinnell; Dean Starnes of Lakewood, Colo.; and Richard Starnes of Charlottesville, Va.; three daughters: Jacilyn Siepmann of Des Moines; Jeannette Lender of Brooklyn; and Carol Evans of Searsboro.

Memorials may be made to the Anna Starnes memorial fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
