CARLENE ANN (SHOCKLEY) KRUMM

Carlene Ann (Shockley) Krumm, 77, of Grinnell died May 23, 2014, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with Pastor Matt Oleson of Grinnell officiating. Pallbearers were Jason Krumm, Travis Hammond, Michael Van Tomme, Anthony Green, Timothy Hammond and T.J. and Jacob Askelson. Burial was in Westfield Cemetery south of Grinnell.

Visitation was held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the family present from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Carlene Krumm Memorial Fund and will be shared with the Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve or Westfield Cemetery Association.

Carlene was born December 6, 1936, in Grinnell, the daughter of Kenneth Faye and Anna LaChrista Villhauer Shockley. She was a 1955 graduate of Grinnell High School and attended food service seminars at Iowa State University.

On June 5, 1955, she was united in marriage to John V. Krumm at the Grinnell First Friends Church. The couple farmed north of Grinnell for many years and she was also employed with GTE and the Grinnell-Newburg School District. She retired in 1999.

Carlene was past madam president of the Grinnell Eagles Auxiliary, past president of the Grinnell Lady Elks, past secretary/treasurer of Oakland Acres Women's Golf for many years and volunteered at Grinnell Regional Medical Center for several years.

The greatest things in her life were her marriage to John, her children and their families. Her other passions were bird-watching, fishing, knitting, crocheting and quilting. A fun time was when the family would gather at her farm pond for a day of fishing and good food. The trips to Minnesota to go fishing were a special thing, too. Playing golf was a fun activity; although aggravating at times, as that hole-in-one never happened. She was fortunate that she was able to travel to some awesome places including Africa, Ireland, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska and Canada. Her "second home" in Mission, Texas, was where she met many new friends. One of the things she missed were the times she and John spent on the sun porch of their farm house where they would look out over their farm and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. She states, "All in all, I have been blessed with a wonderful family and many awesome friends."

Survivors include her four children, John (Sharon) Krumm of Grinnell, Wanda (Lyle) Askelson of Decorah, Valerie (Rick) Hammond of Grinnell and Marcus (Shelly) Krumm of Kellogg; ten grandchildren, Jason (Mary Beth) Krumm, Jessica (Michael) Van Tomme, Jacob and Tommy John Askelson, Travis (Kristi) Hammond, Tanya (Anthony) Green, Tim (Colleen Schmitt) Hammond, P.F.C. Dustin Bailey, Alison (Matt) Blankenfeld and Jessica (Zack) Story; ten great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Kylie and Kody Krumm, Ava and Mia Van Tomme, Whitney (C.J.) Green, Emily Hammond, Cristiano Hammond and Denzil and Lily Green; and one great-great-granddaughter, Audrey Gray; two brothers, Ken "Bud" Shockley and Tom Shockley; and one sister, Helen Cox. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John, in 2003; and one sister, Hazel Shultz.
