JOYCE HUIZER

Dr. Joyce Baarda Huizer, 69, of Knoxville died Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta, Ga. She died of respiratory failure brought on by a spinal cord injury which occurred in Yucatan, Mexico.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Second Reformed Church in Pella, with Marinus Spierenbug officiating. Organist will be Davis Folkerts, and soloist will be Dale Jensen. Burial of the cremains will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sully Cemetery.

The daughter of Dick and Julia DePrenger Baarda, she was born March 9, 1929, in Jasper County. She was a graduate of Grinnell High School. She was married to Hubert V. Huizer June 1, 1950, in Sully. The couple lived in the Sully prior to moving to Pella in 1979, and later to a home north of Knoxville.

She began her teaching career in rural schools. In 1961, she received her B.S.E. from Drake University. While she was principal at Lynnville-Sully schools, she returned to Drake and earned her M.S.E. in 1966. She became assistant professor of education at Central College in 1969. While teaching at Central, she returned to Drake and received her doctorate in education in 1977. She was promoted to professor of education in 1986.

In 1987-88, she received an Outstanding Performance Award from Central College. She retired from Central in 1994.

Dr. Huizer was coordinator of the Elderhostel Programs in Pella and Yucatan at the time of her death. She was a member of the Second Reformed Church of Pella, the Pella Historical Society, the Red Rock Lake Association, the Marion County Historical Society and numerous local, state and national educational organizations and committees.

She is survived by her mother, Julia Pearce of Grinnell; one son, Mark V. Huizer of Sully; two daughters, Ronda Whitehorn of Russell, Ga., and Sonya Prendergast of Brandon, Miss.; four sisters, Ila Mae Huyser of Grinnell, Lucille Nikkel of Grinnell, Karen Langstraat of Indianola and Karma Burman of Plano, Texas; and two brothers, Bruce Baarda of Sully and Dean Baarda of Scottsdale, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her father and her husband.

Memorials may be made to the Dr. Joyce B. Huizer Scholarship Fund at Central College.
