VADENA R. FISHER

Vadena R. Fisher, 91, of Marengo and formerly of Brooklyn, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2013, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

A memorial service was held Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor. Inurnment was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Central City. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Vadena was born on Aug. 10, 1922, in Central City to Moses and Ida Harnish Beasley. She was raised in Central City and graduated with the Class of 1939 from Central City High School. In 1942, she enrolled in the Cadet Corps Nursing School at Jane Lamb Hospital in Clinton. During World War II she served her country in a naval hospital in Chelsea, Mass. Following the war, she finished her nursing degree at Anderson College in Anderson, Ind. She returned to Iowa and worked as a nurse at the VA Medical Hospital in Iowa City.

On November 30, 1952, she was united in marriage to Virgil C. Fisher. The couple lived in Indianapolis. Following her husband's death in 1958, she returned to Central City to care for her parents, and work at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. In 1973, she moved to Holiday Lake near Brooklyn and worked at Grinnell General Hospital. From 1974 to 1985, she traveled to hospitals in Topeka, Kansas, Des Moines, and Portland, Ore. Following her retirement, she resided at Holiday Lake in an earth home that she built.

Vadena enjoyed gardening, woodworking, cutting firewood and spending time on her computer. She was a past member of the Holiday Lake Maintenance Board and the Deborah Rebekah Lodge.

Survivors include one sister, Wilma Hart of Brooklyn; one brother, Thomas Beasley of Hopewell, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Raymond Beasley; and two sisters, Myrtle Hull and Marian Freeman.
