J. ASA ARNOLD

J. Asa Arnold, 91, of Grinnell died Monday, April 28, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. at Carman Center in Mayflower Health Center, 600 Park St., with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Music will be by Kathleen McCune and Kathleen Noss, pianists; David Arnold, saxophonist, and Bill Surburg, vocalist. Burial will be Monday, May 5, at Fairview Cemetery in Cedar Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Mayflower or Pangani Lutheran Children's Center in Nairobi, Kenya.

He was born Nov. 1, 1911, in Cedar Falls, the son of John and Rella Carter Arnold. He was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and later attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He received the bachelor of arts degree from Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., in 1972. He was married to Audelle Marie Lee on Nov. 24, 1937, in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids, Denver, Colo., Cedar Falls and Sitka, Alaska, prior to moving to Spokane in 1969. While in Spokane he was a computer operator for the city. Following the death of his wife in 1981, he retired and moved to Grinnell. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Emmaus Group in Grinnell and Cedar Rapids and a long-time hospice volunteer.

He is survived by one daughter, Cecilia Noss of Reading, England; two sons, J. Phillip Arnold of Grinnell and Mark Arnold of Arlington, Va.; one brother, Robert Arnold of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Florence Vorderberg of Buckhannon, W.Va.; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sisters and one brother.
