July 31, 1980RITES HELD FOR MR. JOHNSON
Delno F. "Bill" Johnson, 56 of Rte. 1, Grinnell, died Sunday afternoon at his home of an apparent heart attack.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kenneth Santee, pastor of the Lynnville Friends Church, officiating. Organist was Diane James, and vocalists were Alfred and Paula Steen. Pallbearers were Robert DeHoedt, Scott DeHoedt, Wayne DeHoedt, Don Johnson, Lyle Johnson and Doyle Mikels. Flower bearers were Arl and Louise Crews. Burial was at West Liberty Cemetery near Searsboro. Memorials in Mr. Johnson's name may be sent to the funeral home.
The son of Harry and Mamie Mikels Johnson, he was born Feb. 7, 1924, near Searsboro. He attended rural school near his home and later attended Searsboro School.
He worked with his father in the logging business and later was employed by the Western Union Co., working in Illinois, Nebraska, Wyoming and New Mexico.
On July 16, 1949, he was married to Nira Elizabeth Schneider at Castle Rock, Colo. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson moved to Lynnville in 1966, where he was employed by the Lynnville Telephone Co. He was also a representative for Roto-Rooter Service and served as Lynnville town marshal. He later worked as a maintenance engineer for the Maytag Hotel in Newton.
The Johnson family came to Grinnell in 1974 and Mr. Johnson became the owner and operator of the Park Hotel and the Courtesy Cab. Co. For the past year he was self-employed as an appliance repairman. He was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Nira; his children, Charles S. Johnson of Killduff, Michael W. Johnson of Grinnell, George F. Johnson of Searsboro, Charlene E. Johnson of Grinnell, and Virginia Harding and Linda Whont, both of Odessa,
Tex.; his mother, Mrs. Mamie Johnson of Grinnell; a sister, Mrs. Gylena Pickhardt of Malcom; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Jesse.
