GLADYS COCHRAN

Gladys Murphy Cochran, 89, Oskaloosa, died Dec. 26, at the Oskaloosa hospital. Services were held at Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma, at 10 a.m. Dec. 29. The Rev. Sue Krummel of the Deep River United Church officiated.

Casket bearers were Ronald Goldsmith, Newell Lash, Marvin Rozenboom, Bill Rempp, Donald Schultze and Jim Cole.

Burial was in the Guernsey Cemetery.

Gladys was born May 9, 1903 at Guernsey, the daughter of David and Kate Baker Murphy. She graduated from Guernsey High School.

On May 17, 1922, she married John Frederick (Fred) Cochran in Deep River. The couple lived in Guernsey until moving to Montezuma in 1934. While her husband served as Poweshiek County Sheriff, Gladys cooked prisoners' meals at the jail. She later managed Wimmers Department Store and then worked at Sig Manufacturing for several years.

Gladys and Fred moved to Shady Lodge Apartments, Oskaloosa, in 1978. She became a resident of Siesta Park Nursing Home last January.

Gladys was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, on May 17, 1984, one sister, Hazel Tanner, and one brother, Vern E. Murphy.

Gladys is survived by one son and his wife, Darrell and Maxine Cochran of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
