FUNERAL HELDMrs. Bernice Gifford Bigelow Dies
Saturday; Funeral Held
This Morning.
----------------------------------------------Bernice Hiser Bigelow, the only child of Mr. Frank H. and Phoebe Estelle Gifford, was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and passed away at the Osawatomie Hospital, Osawatomie, Kansas, Saturday, April 1, 1933. Funeral services were held this morning.
Most of her life was spent in Marshalltown, Grinnell and Chicago. She attended the Grinnell high school Mrs. Bigelow was a music lover and was a fine pianist. She had training in St. Joseph Musical Academy in Dubuque.
She was married to Mr. George H. Hiser at Marshalltown June 18, 1909. Two children were born to this home, Gertrude and Gifford. Gertrude is taking nurse training at the Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago. Gifford is attending the Grinnell high school.
Mrs. Hiser and Mr. C.E. Bigelow were married in July, 1932, and had a beautiful home in Chanute, Kansas.
Mrs. Bigelow has been in failing health for some time. However, her physicians had given her and her family great encouragement that she would be well again and soon. She had undergone a major operation and was getting along nicely when death came, a great shock to all.
Her father, F.H. Gifford, is the manager of the Monroe Hotel in Grinnell. The news of his daughter's death was hard to face. She was a good mother and her children loved and honored her for bringing them up to believe in and do the right. She always urged them to attend Sunday school, church and the Epworth League.
Mrs. Bigelow is survived by her husband, C.E. Bigelow; her father Mr. F.H. Gifford, Mrs. Gifford and two children, Gertrude and Gifford.
Brief funeral services were held at her apartment in the Monroe Hotel Tuesday morning at ten o'clock and the burial service was held at Marshalltown where she was laid to rest in the family mausoleum. Her mother died June 12, 1920, but Mrs. Elizabeth Gifford has taken a great interest in the children.
Services were conducted by the Rev. W.J. Fowler of the Methodist church. The daughter Gertrude Hiser of Chicago and the husband Mr. C.E. Bigelow from Chanute, Kansas, were present at the service. The pallbearers were Frank Clindinin, John Manly, Carl Child, George Clifton, James Buswell, and Elmer Bortell.
