RITES HELD FOR
ROBERT MASON

Robert Thomas Mason, 53, of Rte. 3, Grinnell, died late Saturday afternoon at Marshalltown Manor in Marshalltown, where he had been a patient since September.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert L. Hempel, pastor of the Newburg-Chester United Church of Christ-Congregational officiating. Organist was Mrs. Robert Ashman. Pallbearers were Harmon Anderson, Delbert Campbell, Robert Jensen, Gary Mommer, James Slebiska and Robert Stewart. Honorary pallbearers were Doyle Altemeier, Howard Davis, Raymond Hartzell, Leonard Hendrickson, Edward Johnston, Ben Mitchell, Edwin M. Peterson, Charles Sergeant, and Al Ward.

Elks rites were conducted by members of Grinnell B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 1266, and American Legion rites were conducted by members of Newburg American Legion Post No. 640.

A Robert T. Mason Memorial Fund has been established.

The son of George E. and Martha Ann Magee Mason, he was born Sept. 15, 1922, on a farm near Newburg. He was graduated from Newburg High School in 1941 and attended Iowa State University in Ames. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On March 8, 1943, he was married to B. Berniece Wilson in Miles. The couple had two sons.

Mr. Mason was an active member of the Elks Lodge and had served as exalted ruler and later as chaplain. He was commander of the Newburg American Legion, holding that position for the past 22 years.

He served on the Poweshiek County Selective Service Board. In recent years, he became a member of the Forty and Eight at Marshalltown. He was a member of the Newburg United Church of Christ and served on the church's board of trustees. He was also a member of the Grinnell Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Berniece; two sons, William R. Mason of Gilman and Thomas C. Mason of Grinnell; a granddaughter; and a brother, John G. Mason of San Diego, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mrs. Marjorie Knapp and Mrs. Betty Paulson; and a brother, Earle Mason.
