Nora Hazel Rieck, 100, died Sunday, Aug. 15, at the Senior Home in Montezuma.
She was born Oct. 2, 1892, in Lincoln Township near Guernsey, the daughter of Augustus and Julia Acord Van Fossen. She attended rural school in Lincoln Township. On Dec. 18, 1912, she was united in marriage with Lewis Rieck in Lincoln Township. To this union one son was born.
They moved to their farm east of Deep River in 1920. In 1965 they retired into Deep River.
Hazel gave music and piano lessons for several years. She was a member of the United Church of Deep River, Fifty-Plus Club and the Hobby Club. She also remained a member of the Farm Bureau and had sung in the Farm Bureau Chorus. In July 1990 she became a resident of the Montezuma Senior Home.
A remarkable woman, she continued to remain current on events. She would ask about the children, grandchildren and their animals. She crocheted and knitted, having made several pairs of slippers. She liked to garden and raise flowers. She loved to fish and in latter years she could not wait to play bingo. Her family remembers how she baked pie nearly every day.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lewis, in September, 1982.
Hazel is survived by one son and his wife, Gerald and Gertrude Rieck of Montezuma; three grandchildren: Gwen Rieck of Montezuma, Marilyn Warwick of Deep River, and Wayne Rieck of Barnum; four great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; 21 great great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Services were held Aug. 18 at Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma, with interment in Golden Rod cemetery, Deep River.
