M.W. AHRENS

M.W. "Bill" Ahrens, 73, of 1402 Elm St., Grinnell, died of a heart attack Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Wiltfang Medical Clinic here.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Grinnell Christian Church, with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Organist will be Nancy Sears, and vocalists will be LeRoy and Doris Calvin.

Pallbearers will be Leona Chase, Pat Gallagher, Russ Greer, Chad Hauser, Dustin Hauser, Jon Hauser, Kyle Pedersen, Patt Probert and Bill Tinkle. Honorary bearers will be M.B. Davis, Lloyd Durr, Dennis Elhard, Ralph Fleener, Virgil Jones, Raymond King, Paul Mason, Joe Matthiesen, Bob Renaud and Warner Steele.

Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials in Mr. Ahrens' name may be made to the Grinnell Elks Building Fund.

The son of Edward and Carolyn "Carrie" Schultz Ahrens, he was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Grinnell. He attended Grinnell schools, graduating from Grinnell High School in 1939. During World War II he served with the U.S. Air Force in the European and African theaters.

He was married to Betty J. Taylor April 25, 1942, in Yakima, Wash. The couple lived in Grinnell where Mr. Ahrens worked for his family in the operation of the North Market. He became self-employed as a butcher and farmer in 1958. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and the V.F.W.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; his daughter, Becky Hauser of Grinnell; two grandchildren; one sister, Verna Tullis of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and one brother, Edward of Fairfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Fremond and Wesley.
