MILDRED B. BLACK

Mildred B. Black, 94, of Grinnell, died Tuesday, March 12, 2003, at Crestview Manor in Webster City of complications of dementia.

A funeral service was held Monday March 17, at Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Music was by Barbara Chitwood, pianist, and Rich Thorson, vocalist. Fraternal rites were conducted by members of Holly Chapter #472, Order of Eastern Star. Casket bearers were Al Carpenter, David Entriken, Andrew Latz, Dave Sears, Curtis Stemsrud and Randy Stemsrud. Burial was in Pleasant Township Cemetery near Ewart. Memorials may be made to Dollars for Scholars, c/o Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell.

She was born Feb. 23, 1909, near Grinnell to Berger K. and Olla Mabel Christianson Stemsrud. She attended rural schools and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1927. On March 9, 1930, she was married to Oval H. Black in Davenport. They lived in various communities in the Midwest before moving to a farm near Ewart in 1942. In 1965 they moved to Grinnell and established Black Real Estate Company which owned rental properties. She has resided at Crestview Manor in Webster City since 1999.

She was a member of Grinnell Christian Church and Holly Chapter #472, Order of Eastern Star, Malcom.

She is survived by one sister, Bernice Cappasso of Ocala, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Clara Bouma and Nellie Shimer and four brothers, Lawrence, Bert, Clinton and Arne Stemsrud.
