L.P. RUSSELL

Lester Phelps Russell was born near Kirtland, Ohio May 23, 1832. At the age of 12 years his parents came westward, residing for a short in Jackson county, Iowa. Later they located near Dubuque, in the county of the same name, where they remained for nineteen years. While there he was married to Miss Sallie A. Shumway, March 19, 1854, with whom he lived until separated by his demise. To them were born three sons and five daughters, all of whom survive him except the eldest daughter, who died at the age of five years. Aside from his own family he provided homes for four children, three of whom have grown to womanhood. In June, 1864, he moved to Cedar county, Iowa, where he was engaged in farming until September, 1889, when he removed his family to Grinnell.

All his children had gathered home before his death, and after meeting them again and speaking his heartfelt appreciation of their presence, he expressed a willingness to depart. His only anxiety was concerning those whom he left behind.
After a patient and prolonged illness the summons came at 3:30 A.M., March 24, 1899, his ailment being cancer of the pancreas and stomach.

Deceased was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, having united with the same in September, 1868, at Buffalo Prairie, Illinois. His daily life was an illustration of his firm faith and belief in the gospel of Christ, remaining true to his convictions to the last.

Of his father's family two brothers survive him, Isaac E. of Ellsworth, Kansas, and Silas E. of this city. Tokens of respect and sympathy were manifested on the part of many by the floral contributions presented, especially noticeable among which was the offering of choice roses from the class '99, G.H.S.

The funeral occurred at the home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Elder Scott of Lamoni, Iowa.
