Following Address

Dr. Harry G. Barnes, 53, former Grinnellian and prominent educator, died at a Chicago, Ill., hospital Tuesday night following a heart attack.

Dr. Barnes had given a speech before the Illinois Funeral Director's Association Monday evening and became ill shortly after finishing.

Barnes was a grand-nephew of J.B. Grinnell and was graduated from Grinnell college. He received his Ph.D. degree from the State University of Iowa where he was also examiner and registrar and professor of speech.

He had also taught at the University of South Dakota, Louisiana State University, and was on the staff of New York University at the time of his death.

The author of "Speech Handbook" and "Speech Fundamentals," Dr. Barnes was also secretary of the Iowa State Education Association in 1945.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Theta Pi, Kiwanis Club, Central States Speech Association, North Central Association of Collegiate Registrars and the American Association of Teachers of Speech.

He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Bell Anderson; a daughter, Mrs. Lewis C. Cobb, Jr., Park Ridge, Ill., and twins, Lt. (jg) Harry G. Barnes, Jr., of Corpus Christi, Tex., and Harriet Barnes of Grinnell, currently serving with the Red Cross in Korea.

Also surviving are two brothers, E.H. Barnes, Minneapolis, Minn., and C.Y. Barnes, San Gabriel, Calif., and one grandchild.

Funeral services are being arranged by Smith Funeral Home.
