Another of the old and respected pioneers of Grinnell, Iowa, passed away last Wednesday afternoon, December 5th, 1923, at 3:50 o'clock when John Kelly died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Martin Schwab following a few months of very serious illness which he bore patiently and uncomplainingly to the end.

Mr. Kelly was born in county Roscommon, Ireland, April, 1845. He was the son of George and Ann Kelly and resided in Ireland until Oct. 6, 1869 when he sailed for New York City. From there he moved to Des Moines, where he was united in marriage 1880 to Martha A. Hotchkin, who preceded him in death, two years and eight months.

He leaves to mourn his loss one brother, Charles, in Ireland, five children, Mary Plum, George Kelly, Martha Schwab, Charles Kelly and Lucy Cavanaugh of Grinnell.

Since his marriage he assumed farming until thirteen years ago when he moved to Grinnell, where he lived until death.

Funeral services were held at the Catholic church Friday at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. M.J. Hannon. Bearers were Alex Devereux, Ed Comerford, Lou Higdon, Owen Flanagan, Henry Simmon and Ed. Lynch. Interment was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
