BILL CAVANAUGH BURIED FRIDAY IN GRINNELL

Funeral services were held Friday morning, Nov. 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Grinnell, for Charles William Cavanaugh of Montezuma. The Rev. John T. Kennedy, pastor of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brooklyn, officiated at the Requiem Low Mass.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with the Blakely-Stevens American Legion Post providing the graveside military rites. Pallbearers were: Marcus Shearer, William Pitka, Harold Taylor, Hugh McMeekin, Fred Zorn and Ray Wasson.

Charles William (Bill) Cavanaugh, 72, died early Tuesday morning at Veteran's Hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient for seven weeks. He had been in failing health the past four years.

He was the son of James and Elizabeth Duffy Cavanaugh and was born in Black Hawk county June 9, 1893. He attended rural schools near his home and an auto mechanic trade school in Omaha.

On Nov. 28, 1917, at St. Mary's Church in Grinnell he was married to Lucy I. Kelly by the Rev. M.J. Hannon. During World War I he served with the Army Motor Transport Corps.

Mr. and Mrs. Cavanaugh lived for a time in Waterloo and for ten years in Grinnell. In 1938 they moved to Montezuma where he was employed as foreman and master mechanic at the Chevrolet garage. Ill health forced his retirement two years ago.

Mr. Cavanaugh was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Brooklyn and the Blakely-Stevens American Legion Post in Montezuma.

He is survived by wife, Lucy of Montezuma; five brothers, Edward J. and Ralph of Hudson, Iowa, George, Elmer and Earl of Waterloo; and three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Graney of Deer Lodge, Mont., Mrs. Ann Meyer of Waterloo and Mrs. Ted (Leona) Schaefer of Eagle Center, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
