Funeral services for Hazel M. Vales were held today (Monday) at Waterbury Funeral Service in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, with burial at Memorial Park.

Born March 26, 1912, in Belle Plaine, Minn., she was the daughter of Walter and Effie Bliss Siemon.

She taught school in Belle Plaine for six years before her marriage to Robert M. Vales on March 30, 1937. In 1945, the couple moved to Sioux City from Minneapolis. In 1958, she began working at the Woodbury County Treasurer's Office, where she stayed until her retirement in 1976.

After her retirement and for the next decade, the couple lived as snowbirds, taking their camper to Brownsville, Texas, during winters and during the summer, camping and fishing in Canada. The couple also made numerous trips to Germany to visit her brother.

She quilted, completing a quilt for each of her nine grandchildren. She loved to play cards and enjoyed participating in Pfitsch's Fish, the local community swimming club. She swam 19 laps five days a week until her 92nd birthday.

She is survived by three daughters, Joyce Wagner of Grinnell, Nancy Paczosa of Overland Park, Ill., and Carol Dennis of Edwardsburg, Mich.; a son, Roger Vales of Annapolis, Md.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Ruth Voita; and two brothers, Raymond and Arthur Siemon.
