EARLY MEMBER OF
COLLEGE FACULTLY
CALLED BY DEATH

Carl W. Von Coelln, identified with the earliest history of Grinnell College and from 1876 to 1882 superintendent of public instruction for the state of Iowa, died on Sunday night at his home in New London, Iowa, of diabetes, aged 83 years. A widow and five children survive him.

Professor Von Coelln came to Grinnell, then Iowa College, in 1863, as professor of mathematics and remained until 1869, when he was succeeded by professor S.J. Buck, who came to Grinnell in 1864 as principal of the academy. Professor L.F. parker was acting president of the college in those days and while he was absent in the army during the Civil War the burden of administration fell jointly upon the shoulders of Professor Von Coelln and Professor Buck.

Professor Von Coelln was also for a time a member of the faculty of Buena Vista College at Storm Lake and principal of the West Waterloo high school.

During the last years of his life he edited a paper in New London.
