ARLENE B. SMITH

Arlene B. Smith of Grinnell died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at Victor Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Andrews officiating. Interment will follow in Victor Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Victor Baptist Church. A memorial fund has been established for Victor Baptist Church or East Iowa Bible Camp. Nevenhoven Funeral Home in Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements.

Arlene Byrle Horras Smith was born Aug. 25, 1921, near Sigourney to Roy Samuel and Minnie Christina Cox Horras. She received her education in schools in Sigourney and Millersburg, graduating with the class of 1939 from Millersburg High School. She was married on Sept. 21, 1940, in Killduff to Melvin Lloyd Smith. They were the parents of four children, Dean, Kenneth, Linda and Rhonda. They farmed at Killduff, Ottumwa, Millersburg, North English, Victor and Brooklyn, moving to Grinnell in 1998.

She was a member of Victor Baptist Church. She was a hard-working farm wife who enjoyed quilting, sewing, homemaking and cooking.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin of Grinnell; two sons, Dean of Grinnell and Ken of Newton; two daughters, Linda Gross of Victor and Rhonda Klaassen of Brooklyn; one sister Irene Smith of North English; 13 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Orville, Howard, Marvin and Dale Horras and two great grandchildren.
