MRS. MATTIE JOHNSON
DIES IN DES MOINES

Mrs. Mattie Johnson, 74, of 808 Eighth Ave., Grinnell, died Sunday morning at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Mrs. Johnson was born July 19, 1893, at California, Mo., the daughter of Jacob John and Ella Jane Schlup Steiner. She received her education in the local schools near her home in Missouri and on Jan. 8, 1913, at California, Mo., she was united in marriage with Ward Phillip Johnson. To this union was born one son, Richard L. Johnson of Modesto, Calif.

In addition to her son, she is survived by three grandchildren--Carolyn Sue Johnson, Mrs. Helen Ford and Mrs. Colleen Corish all of Modesto, Calif.; and four great grandchildren--Mark and Shawn Ford and Christa and Donna Corish; one brother and two sisters--Sam Steiner of Winthrop, Ark. and Mrs. Tom (Verna) Perry of Kansas City, Kan., and Mrs. Napoleon (Evelyn) Newkirk of Versailles, Mo.; and several nephews and nieces.

Mrs. Johnson and her husband moved to Grinnell about 1913, where she had been employed as a seamstress with the Morrison-Shults Mfg. Co. from 1924 to 1962. Her husband, Ward, preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1961. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grinnell.

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wayne Shireman, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Music will be provided by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner, organist, and Mrs. Donovan Evans, and Mrs. LaForest Sherman, vocalists. Pallbearers will be Paul Thomson, Curtis Clemenson, John Huff, Ron Huff, Rick Huff, and James North.

Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
