LYLE F. BAUMAN, 87

Lyle F. Bauman, 87, of Malcom died Friday, May 9, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

His funeral service was Monday, May 12, at the Malcom United Methodist Church with Pastor Carol Meyers officiating. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom and Smith Funeral Home of Grinnell handled the arrangements.

Pallbearers were Dale and John McCammant, Brian Mitchell, Jamie Evans, Dwaine, Jeff and Wyatt Bauman and Rusty and Bill Massengale.

Honorary bearers were Phyllis Yarger, Dee Dee McDonald, Terri Possehn, Joan Hunt, Susan Wright, Brenda Struth, Tina Brazell, Jennifer Holley, Shelley Tharp, Jody Mathes, and Annie and Allison Bauman.

The son of Frank and Florence Whisenand Bauman, he was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Jones County, S.D. He was raised in Jones County and attended rural school near his home. He moved to the Brooklyn area in 1937. He was married to Ileen M. Ward on Oct. 21, 1939, at her parents' home near Malcom. The couple farmed in Poweshiek county prior to moving to Malcom in 1957, and together they owned and operated Lyle's Market until 1972. He then was employed at Malcom Lumber until his retirement in 1978. He was a former mayor and city council member of Malcom and served on the Malcom Rural School Board. He was a member of the Malcom United Methodist Church, Malcom Volunteer Fire Department and Malcom IOOF Lodge.

Survivors include two sons, Roger Bauman of Grinnell and Lyle Bauman, Jr. of Brooklyn; four daughters, Patricia Massengale of Montezuma, Sharon Linderwell of Guttenberg, Virginia White of Winnsboro, La. and Beverly McCammant of Malcom; one sister, Ruby Cowman of Pleasantville; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

His wife in 1999 and nine brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Malcom Fire Department or Malcom United Methodist Church.
