MRS. LIZZIE SMITH
DIES AT MITCHELLVILLE
LAST RITES FRIDAY

Mrs. Lizzie M. Smith, 91, a longtime Newburg area resident, died Tuesday morning, April 30 at Mitchellville, where she, with her sister, had been making her home with her niece, Mrs. Gerald Brunette, for about a year.

Born Sept. 24, 1876, in the Sonora area of Poweshiek County, Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Joseph and Maria Ludwick Hays. She attended the local schools near her home, and later graduated from the former Grinnell Academy. She then taught school in the Chester and Sonora areas.

On Sept. 11, 1901, she was united in marriage with Joseph Smith at her family home in Sonora. Six children were born to this union: Howard Smith, who passed away Dec. 31, 1967; Mrs. F.M. (Alberta) Sullens of Kellogg, Mrs. Edith Veber of Kellogg, Carl L. Smith of near Newburg, Mrs. C.J. (Louise) Falk of St. Paul, Minn.; and Mrs. C.O. (Ada) Eames of near Gilman.

Survivors also include 13 grandchildren and ?? great grandchildren; her sister, Mrs. Bertha Sexton of Mitchellville; and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Jennie T. Hays of Grinnell.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, one sister, and three brothers.

Following her marriage, Mrs. Smith and her husband had farmed for many years in the Newburg community. She was a member of the Newburg United Church of Christ (Congregational) and the Ladies Aid of the church. She was also a member of the D.A.R. in Grinnell, and the Senior Citizens Group at Mitchellville. While residing in Mitchellville, she had attended the Methodist church.

Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Newburg United Church of Christ (Congregational) with the Rev. David Barker, pastor of the Mitchellville Methodist church officiating.

Organist will be Mrs. Donald J. Renaud. Pallbearers will be Richard Roe, James D. Falk, Neil K. Smith, Dale E. Veber, Craig S. Veber and Charles N. Smith.

Burial will be in the family lot at Chester Township cemetery north of Grinnell.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home through Thursday evening, and Friday morning at the church.
