MARTHA HAYS

Martha Alice Reynolds Hays, daughter of Robert Wesley Reynolds and Sarah Wilson Reynolds, was born September 30, 1882, at Bee Lick, Pulaski county, Kentucky. She passed away suddenly at her farm home 8 miles south of Grinnell at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon January 1, 1958.

She was united in marriage to Walter N. Hays of O.K. Ky., on Dec. 20, 1903, at her father's home. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1953. Two children were born to this union: a daughter, Mrs. Virgil (Edith) Snyder of Tama, and a son, Owen C. Hays of Kansas City, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; two brothers, Green and Mack Reynolds; a sister, Mrs. C.O. (Isabel) Parmley; and a granddaughter, Mary Jane Hays.

Survivors include her husband, Walter N. Hays; her son and daughter; six grandchildren--Frank, Norma Jean, Merle, and Joan Snyder and Paul and Jeanette Hays; three sisters--Mrs. Ed (Bessie) Gooch of New Sharon, Mrs. Nate (Arthusa) Gooch of Grinnell, and Mrs. Henry (Rilla) Sutton of Lakewood, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hays joined church at an early age while in Kentucky. For the past several years she has attended Oak Grove church near her home.

The Hays family came to Iowa in 1910, and have lived in the Grinnell vicinity since that date. They have made their home on a farm eight miles south of Grinnell for the past 20 years. Mrs. Hays enjoyed her home, raising all kinds of flowers, and gardening. She loved to make things and spent many hours on handiwork.

She was a loving wife and mother, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She was a friend to everyone and dearly loved by her many friends as being a genuine pal. She enjoyed attending missionary meetings, church and Sunday school, and took an active part in each.

Funeral services were held for Martha Alice Hays at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home.

Rev. Charles O. Whitely and Rev. Irma Morris officiated at the service. Organist was Mrs. Kathleen Heffner. Special music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. Russell Sams. Caring for flowers were Mrs. William Price and Mrs. Gus Otcheck.

Pallbearers were Carl Boget, Norman Graham, Gus Otcheck, William Price, Rolla Whitaker, and William Laymiller.

Interment was in Hazelwood cemetery, Grinnell.
