MRS. JENNIE HAYS

Mrs. Jennie T. Hays, age 97, of Grinnell, died Saturday, April 14, 1979, at Friendship Manor. She was the daughter of Maximillon and Rosina Ritter Mahler and was born on December 18, 1881 at Boneparte, Iowa. She attended rural school and later taught school.

On January 13, 1904, she was married to Albert Thomas Hays at Boneparte. They were the parents of three sons. Mr. and Mrs. Hays farmed in the Sonora area until Mr. Hays' death in 1941, when she moved to Des Moines to care for her sister. Following the death of her sister, she moved to Boneparte and returned to Grinnell in 1957. She has lived at Friendship Manor since 1971. She was active in the Sonora and Chester churches.

She is survived by her son, Max M. Hays of Holiday Lake near Brooklyn; one granddaughter, Mrs. Allene M. Brobst of Englewood, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren: Laurie Ann and Steven H. Brobst. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons; seven sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services were held 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 17, at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Peter Sawtell, pastor of the Newburg-Chester parish, United Church of Christ-Congregational, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Kathleen Heffner.

Pallbearers were: Harvey Harris, Merle Harris, Wayne Hendrickson, Bob Saunders, Bernard Schmitz and Larry Wade.

Burial was in Chester Cemetery north of Grinnell.
