RITES WERE HELD
LAST FRIDAY FOR
ALBERT T. HAYS

Albert Thomas Hays was born on the farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hays in Chester township, August 9, 1871, and died at the Community hospital in Grinnell January 8, 1941. At the time of his passing Mr. Hays had reached the age of 69 years, 4 months and 29 days.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. W.B. Wilson, assisted by Rev. C.D. Loose, were held at the Chester church Friday afternoon, with burial in the Chester cemetery. The pall bearers were: Lester Hendrickson, Ray Stayton, T.A. Harris, Joe Campbell, Edwin Parish and Henry Frahm. The singers were Mrs. Lester Hendrickson and Mrs. Harlan Dare, with Mrs. Ben Thompson, accompanist.

Mr. Hays grew up on the farm, went to country school, later attended Grinnell college, and was a life-long member of the Sonora, M.E. church. He was also a member of the Sonora Grange.

On January 13, 1904, he was married to Miss Jennie Mahler at Bonaparte, Iowa. The young couple moved at once to the farm where Mr. Hays was born, which they operated for nine years, then to the farm where they have since lived continuously except for a five-year residence in Grinnell.

Three children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. The remaining son, Max Mahler Hays survives his father and lives on the home farm.

Other near relatives still living are his wife; two grandchildren, Marlin Max and Aleene Mary Hays; three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Sexton of Mitchellville, Mrs. J.D. Smith of Newburg, and Miss Pearl Hays of Grinnell; two brothers, William J. Hays of Chester, and Robert M. Hays of Buhl, Idaho.

Mr. Hays was an outstanding example of the sturdy, substantial citizens, whose long residence in Sonora and Chester have made those neighborhoods notable for their high ideals and fine community spirit.

Out of the many interests which he found in the active years of his fruitful life, his home, his church, and his friends always came first, and to all these he was ever the amiable, courteous, sympathetic friend and gentleman.
