JOSEPH BATES HAYS

Joseph Bates Hays, son of John T. and Sarah Hays, was born in Carroll county, Md., January 7, 1849, and died at Olathe, Colo., June 30, 1917.

When he was five years of age the family moved to Grinnell, making the journey overland. Here they lived several years. In 1858 they moved to Chester, where he grew to manhood, enduring all the hardships of pioneer life. When he became of age he improved a part of his father's farm, building the home where he lived until about eight years ago, when he moved to Colorado.

He was married June 5, 1877, to Miss Mary M. Albaugh, of Mechanicstown, Maryland. To this union were born three daughters, Mrs. Martha Foster and Mrs. Katherine Meeker, both of Olathe, Colo., and Mrs. Blanche Tice, of Chester, who were all present at the funeral.

In 1868 he was converted and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Sonora, and later transferred his membership to the church at Olathe.

Short services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clifford Foster at Olathe, and the body was brought by the wife and daughters, back to the old home where he had lived so many years.

The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock, from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tice, and the body laid to rest by the side of his father and mother in Chester cemetery.

The services were conducted by Rev. R.G. Smith, of Tama City, an intimate friend of the family, and at one time pastor of the church at Olathe.

Besides the wife and daughters, he is survived by three grandchildren, Harold and Margaret Tice, and Joseph Hays Foster, and one sister, Mrs. Mary J. Hayes, of Franklin, Neb .

The death of Mr. Hays removes one more of the men who joined the Grinnell colony at the very first. Though but five years of age in 1854, when his parents moved to Grinnell, he was old enough to remember much of the sacrifices of the day, and grew into manhood a typical member of the excellent Chester colony.
