June 1922

MRS. GEORGE W. SLATER

Mary Lucinda Burr was born to Horace S. and Lucy E. Burr. She was born in Alma, Mich., Nov. 4, 1858, and died at her home June 24, 1922, at the age of 63 years, 7 months and 20 days.

When but a small child she moved with her parents to Harvard, Ill., where she resided until the age of 15 years.

Together with her parents she migrated to the western part of the state, passing thru what is now the city of Grinnell, locating in Harlan, Iowa, where she spent her girlhood days.

On Feb. 29, 1880, she was united in marriage to George W. Slater.

To this union were born eight children, four daughters and four sons. In the winter of 1891 they moved to Anita, Iowa, where they lived until 1901, at that time locating with her family in Grinnell where she resided for the past 20 years. In her early life she united with the M.E. church, in which she lived true to her faith, which was one of her greatest comforts during her prolonged months of illness and most patient suffering, ever hopeful 'till the last, her death having broken the family circle.

She is survived by her husband, Geo. W. Slater, Mrs. C.E. Budd, Mrs. W.E. Goff, Mrs. Evangeline LeRoy and Miss Beulah Slater, all of Grinnell; Rolland and Frank of Sioux City, Eber of Grundy Center, and Harold at home. Also four grandchildren: Everett and LeRoy Budd, Anna-Marie Goff of Grinnell and Glen Slater of Sioux City.

Mrs. Slater was a lovable, cheerful woman, with a kind heart and a cheery word for all. Her loving life will be a pleasant memory for her children.

The funeral services were held this afternoon at the M.E. church, conduced by Rev. W.C. Wasser. Burial was in Hazelwood.

Bearers were W.H. Alley, J.H. Alley, W.J. Nelson, A.C. Dickerson, Wm. Zirbel and M.T. Scott. Music was by a quartet composed of Mrs. A.E. Black, Mrs. A.S. Ennis, Mr. Askey and Milton Dieterich.

Many warm friends and admirers join in kindly sympathy with the sorrowing relatives.

The children contribute these verses as expressing their deep and abiding love:

Our dear Mother, she has left us;
Here, her face no more we'll see;
But, says Jesus, in his gospel,
"Suffer her to come to me."

We miss her; Oh! we miss her!
And our hearts are sad today,
When we think of our dear Mother,
In that home so far away.

In our home one place is vacant,
That can never more be filled.
We loved her--yes, we loved her;
But the Angels loved her more,
And they have sweetly called her
To Yonder shining shore.

A few short days we saw her fading,
But could not think Death was so near
'Till in his cold embrace he clasped
her:
We could no longer keep her here.

Beneath the sod her form is resting.
But the spirit has taken its flight,
To the loving God who gave it,
Out of darkness into light.

Far beyond this world of changes,
Far beyond a world of care,
We shall find our missing Mother,
In our Father's mansion fair.
