OBITUARY

Carl George Cordes, son of Dieterich Cordes and his wife, Maria was born on January 9, 1891 about 1-1/2 miles southeast of Guernsey. He received his early education at St. John's Lutheran school. At the age of 13, in 1904, he moved with his parents to Guthrie, Okla. He received his Christian instruction in Immanuel Congregation at Pleasant Valley, Okla. and was confirmed there on April 18, 1905.

On Nov. 9, 1919 he was united in holy wedlock with Louise Nobbe at Pleasant Valley, Okla. To this union three children were born.

In 1939 Mr. Cordes brought his family back to Iowa settling on a farm near the home place southeast of Guernsey, where he has lived ever since.

Mr. Cordes answered the call to the colors of his country December 1918 during the 1st World War. He served faithfully until being discharged January 19, 1919.

Mr. Cordes with his family made St. John's Lutheran, Lincoln Twp., his church home and when able was faithful in attending Devine services.

For quite some years, Mr. Cordes found his health failing him. On Wednesday of last week, his illness necessitated his going to the hospital for care. On Saturday morning his condition grew critical. During the day he would rally and sink until Saturday evening, at which time he enjoyed several hours talking with those in attendance. Near midnight he fell into a sleep from which he never awoke.

As he was visited at the bedside he made a firm confession of faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus the Savior of mankind. He also received Holy Communion for the forgiveness of sins through the strengthening of faith.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, Louise, 3 children, Vera, Mrs. Edwin Niebuhr of Blairstown, Iowa, Oscar and Virtus at home, and three grandchildren. Surviving Mr. Cordes are three brothers, John of Livingston, Calif., Peter of Perry, Okla., and Henry of Guthrie, Okla.

Two brothers, Dick and Louis, and a sister, Anna preceded him in death. He leaves a host of friends, neighbors and acquaintances to mourn his departing.

From his words and life we are reminded of the words of Holy writ.

Psalm 107.1 "Oh give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endureth forever.
